14th Feb

Today, we had a seminar with Dom where he elaborated on our roles and explained what groups require in order to be prepared to shoot. This was really helpful as it gave the group insight into what other pieces of pre-production the group might need. After the seminar the group had a tutorial with Dom where, we presented our progression with our ideas. We spoke to him about our main idea, the homeless football club and about 2nd idea, which was a centred about cabs. He advised, to put our main focus behind the football club as this could cause half-hearted participation towards the progression of a distinct idea.

After our tutorial, the group met up to research further into the homeless football club. I had found out some really interesting points and jotted down some information I had found out. Emily had contacted the manager of the football of the club who was very helpful towards us. She arranged a meeting the crew and the football team on monday at 4pm.

After the meeting, I watched Of time and the city by Terrence davies, it is a really good film, but I want to analyse its sound conventions to help give me direction with my upcoming production.

12th and 13th Meeting Notes

The group have had two meetings over the last couple of days as the days of production approaches. In the first meeting, the group had looked at short films that were inspiring. One was Homelessness by Muhammed Ibrahim and Shelter by Mike Staniforth. As we had a new member in our group, Marcus, the group had brought him up to speed and discussed a role for himself. He is now 2nd Sound editor. The group have also booked equipment from connect 2 under Victor and Ryans' accounts. We have sourced more places to contact to speak to homeless people about providing their accounts for our documentary. The group had also contacted Terry, who was able to agree to being filmed, however it was rather difficult to get a hold of him in the last couple of meetings. The group had come across a rather interesting subject, the Liverpool Homeless Football Club, which I thought would make for an interesting subject, however other members of the group would like our 2nd idea to be centred around cab drivers.

Our meeting today mainly was used to progress the 2nd idea around cab drivers. What needs to be completed is a treatment, however a large proportion of it had be completed today during the meeting. Unfortunately not all members were able to attend, however nobody had heard from Marcus in relation to this meeting.

Presentation on the 7th

The group presented our ideas to our seminar group where we was given feedback and alternative improvements. This session really helped us as it gave us constructive feedback to further our work, allowed us to experience pitching and let us see other groups' pitches.

The first idea we pitched seemed as an approach by Dom, he liked the approach and thought it was good, however with no in concrete. This idea had no solid subject, which we wouldn't be able to make a documentary idea. The second idea seemed good as it was a solid idea, but just needed improvement. One of our fellow classmates at the end of the session suggested that we merge the ideas together, which the group agreed to do. Some other notes I took whilst Dom spoke to the group at the end of session include; making all material relatable, the research is the making of the documentary, a personal account of a person and utilising the memory approach.

The other group we got to watch pitched the idea of making a documentary, judging documentary to be real or fake. I initially that was a good idea, as it would shed insight into how biased documentary is, however Dom responded with the thought that viewers would be manipulated to ask how they are being manipulated, which in its self, could lead the demise of the documentary. He cautioned the group about exploring the subject. The following idea they pitched was about Hitler living in Liverpool in the past. I thought this was a really good idea as this was the first I had heard of it! With the sources and contacts supplied, it was clearly apparent that a lot of research had be undergone to find out this information. Dom's feedback was if you have the contacts and the sources then go with the idea as not a great deal of work has been done on this story. Both pitches were powerful from the group and strong evidence was presented.

The final group pitched an idea similar to ours where it was based around the homeless. Dom's reply at the end of their pitch was if you both groups to select this idea, what will be different? Think about the approach and structure. The following idea from the last group that they pitched was based on the hillsborough disaster. Dom's response was that their is already a lot of information about that subject, so how would your documentary add to the collection that is already out there? Both ideas were good, however the second group had the strongest pitches.

The group headed straight for the library after the meeting to progress our idea. Everyone had begun sourcing hostels to contact to ask if they have anyone who would like to give a personal story. Whilst this was being done, I had produced a treatment, which suited our merged idea. The group hopes to hear back from someone as soon as possible or we may have to go along with our contingency idea.

meeting on the 5th

Today we held a meeting to advance our plans. The group is currently omni-directional with the plan, which is making it hard to progress. What we concluded on was to give a few places that we plan to centre our documentary around and see how well our pitch does.

The progress with our 2nd idea seems to be a lot more firm than our initial.

Meeting on the 3rd

Yesterday the group had a meeting

We have begun to develop our pitch for our initial idea and successfully decided on a contingency idea.

Some areas of idea development the grouped addressed were:
- The plan
- The USP
- How compatible the idea is in regards to the brief
- How clear is to the consumer
- our creative approaches
- What constraints there are

Emily has sourced a site where we can read peoples' stories and contact them. This is a important and great attribute to the documentary.

The group's next meeting is on wednesday

Meeting on the 1st Feb

This has been the first group meeting I have attended and been invited to (apparently there has been more)

What we discussed is the initial idea and contingency idea.
Some ideas included: a documentary on: different classes of people in liverpool, shoes, buskin, street art, a documentary about making a documentary and the liverpool tunnels.

Unfortunately Emily was not able to make the group meeting as she had work, but I had ran by her the progression made from the meeting. Another meeting is set to happen on Monday.

Since Emily had not attended the meeting, the group could not finalise roles, as of now the roles are as follows:

Sound Operator - Ryan Wroe
Sound Editor - Kieran Woodhall
Editor - Tyrese Thomas

The roles needed to be filled are director, producer and camera operator.

The group have spent too much time on deciding on ideas rather than building our pitch, would could initially have a negative effect on our pitch. A lot of pre-production and research needs to go into this project before we pitch it.

Our primary idea is to make a documentary that is focussed on the memories people have of Liverpool, from what I envisioned. This documentary will be comprised of cutaways related to the dialogue used and puts a heavy requirement on the response from interviewees, which can possibly be the downfall of this project.
