21/4 DMF Illustrated Production Report
Overall I am satisfied with the process undergone to creating our transmedia
project. I have learnt the importance of audience engagement through
transmedia content and how it can make audiences brand advocates.
I began the module with really high expectations for a project I wanted to create. My idea for the project was to create a film that was based around a game. To represent game graphics, I planned to use footage of real people dressed up as a game characters. The transmedia elements of this project would have been the fan-fiction created, the blogs for each character and infographics to understand characters’ special moves.
Another element I really wanted to implement into the project was the use of dopamine. This was a task Matt asked the group to have a look into to have an understanding of it. In later sessions, Matt conducts an exercise with the group to actually raise the levels of Dopamine to present its effectiveness to the group.
We explored the uses of collaborative software that could be used in production. I thought this would have been a great method to communicate clear messages as it goes beyond the usual and stale communication of a Facebook group. Unfortunately my group did not go much further to using collaborative, which is a humongous shame. The Wikia has not been edited by anyone else other than myself meaning it has not been kept up to date with accordance to everyone. The plan was to keep this page up to date to make it a hub for anybody to have a look at.
The communication between the group has been appalling. This fault has caused the project to be mediocre and the idea isn’t very impressive either. I found myself in a situation where I wasn’t sure of which group to join, because everyone had already begun ideas and wasn’t looking for any additional group members. My idea was well thought out and had plenty of room for expansion, but the problem was not having a group at the beginning. Then I had formed a group with someone who had changed module, which led me to leaving my original idea to attempt to join someone else’s group. The group I joined weren’t very committed from what I could tell, so I asked to join an alternative group. The next group I joined I thought would be more committed to the project, but it seems like the same result as the previous one.
Matt has challenged groups each week with a new consideration for transmedia content, which has really opened my vision to how they can come together, but without a steady and well-developed project. Only the minimal amount of results can be produced from practicing these new approaches, which I found quite sad.
I was even considering app releases similar to that of Totally Amp’d however this project would not make great use of that. I do like the exploration of sites and blog sites. I didn’t find the sites as appealing as I thought I would, because included fee apart from Tumblr. The issue with Tumblr is that it can be seen as

I didn’t find the sites as appealing as I thought I would, because included fee apart from Tumblr. The issue with Tumblr is that it can be seen as
unprofessional, but it does have that organic blog feel to it and a very strong
community.
The transmedia elements I created were the website for the hotel, the wiki page
and a blog for someone who stayed at the Earnshaw hotel.
For the wiki site, I chose to use wikia.com to create this page, as it was very simple and straightforward. The site has settings that can prevent unauthorised to edits to occur and is very easy to navigate. For me personally it has been very useful as it provides an online hub of information about the project and is very easy to update. This was one of the elements Matt presented to the class in a seminar session and I thought it would be extremely beneficial for the project.

The wikia’s presence will enable anyone who is interested in the development
side of the project to see the ideas and inspirations that came to fruition whilst
forming the idea. This will produce a stronger engagement with the audience as
they may suggest ideas to improve the project.
The website for the hotel was quite simple to make. I would of been happy to create a website on Adobe Dreamweaver and then port over to a blog site to host, however there are many limitations to this. The alternative was to create the site using a template from the chosen site. I chose to create the site on Weebly and it works in communicating the hotel to viewers on a professional level.
Anyone who uses the contact form will be put through to one of the crew. The website creates a professional presence online and in our narrative arc, this will reinforce the presence of the hotel owner as there is a site for the hotel. The presence of a website can change viewers’ dynamics of a place or person. Some viewers may believe the website to be true and actually use the forms whilst navigating the site.
The blog I created is for someone who spent a night at the Earnshaw hotel. The plan is to have this person blog about the findings of the detective and also about things related to other hotels. The blogger’s alias is bloggeretombaker.

Transmedia allows for an audience to engage with an audience in numerous
ways than one and consumption. It takes audience viewing to different levels
making audiences focus more on separate senses. Our project makes viewers tie
together the different elements to form our intended narrative. Brands like
Marvel have seen success from the transmedia path as different universes
collectively form new meanings and interpretations. The speed of consumption
can be controlled depending on which transmedia element is used. For example;
infographics can share information a lot quicker than a film can as images are
omni-present, but films have a sequential order to release information so they
hold audiences for a longer period of time in comparison to infographics.
The Twitter account for the Earnshaw hotel owner is purely to reinforce his character in our project. With a Twitter account, the bridge between the audience and this character will be closer. As Twitter is known for its informal environment and tone, the Twitter posts for this will account will reflect the character’s thoughts and personality. I am using a tweet post scheduler to post tweets automatically rather than having constantly access the account. This allows me to focus on any other tasks after creating the posts. The application is called Twuffer and is free.

I always had concerns about the tasks that Tyler had set himself for the group,
because I understood he was working by himself for his other module. In one of
the last few group meetings we had, I see that it has been a very pressurised
position for himself and offered to lend a hand with whatever outstanding tasks
there were for this project. It would have been better to share these tasks out
from as early as possible to enable myself to complete them to the best of my
ability. Especially the social media department, currently the social media feels
like it is really lacking the presence it should have. If the time was structured
from earlier, I think a stronger social media delivery would have been made.
In conclusion, I think the project has come together well. It unravels like an
investigation and the flow is easily understood. The characters all have strong
personalities, which I think are very relatable and the use of different media
outlets creates a dynamic user journey. The journey is strong for the audience to
build connections with the characters and places of interest. The project’s
strengths are; the versatility of transmedia, the user experience and the realness
felt. Things I would like to improve if I was to make the project again from the
beginning are; when the social media for characters are made, when the social
media posts are created, create a more detailed website for the hotel and
communicate more frequently with the crew to execute tasks more effectively. The trailer and poster are really useful for promotion too.

21/4 DMF Trailer and social media engagement
So we now have the teaser trailer available for people to view online. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_tNWLxjCKo
I produced a poster for the project, however Tyler has created a much better one which I am very impressed with. I have also replied to Tony Crawley's Twitter account from one of my alias twitter accounts. This is to promote the engagement between real people and Tony.

17/4 & 19/4 DMF Today's meeting
17/4
Today the group had a meeting to discuss our progress and to see what else we needed accomplish. The group needed to bring together the transmedia elements to ensure the plot can be successfully understood. The theme I had used for the site was disliked, however I have now found some themes which the group like.
I need to fill in social media engagements for the hotel owner and bring together all the information for the wikia site.
19/4
I will be completing the social media engagements using Twitter for the Earnshaw hotel owner.

4/4 Updated website
I updated the Earnshaw hotel site after receiving requests from Lou and Tyler.
I edited the about section of the site and added images from the desired website.

25/3 DMF Website creation
Today I created the website for the Earnshaw hotel. The URL for the site is http://earnshawhotel.weebly.com. The theme I chose is inspired by the idea of the hotel's interior colours and designs. I published the website and wanted to see what the group thought of the site as all the group isn't in today. Lou got back saying that the about section should be retail orientated, so I changed the about section to provide viewers with a more retail experience and added a booking page as suggested. The page works well for viewers to get a visual perspective of what the hotel would look like in real life and there is a visual colour scheme to quickly immerse viewers. I have sent an email requesting to book the green screen studio for a day in the easter period and this will be for the tv presenter cover.
Tyler and Lou suggested changes about the theme, which was very useful. Tyler thought the theme wasn't very formal and Lou thought the images should be of Manchester's skyline as that is where it is set. I thought it was a good idea and changed the images to images of Manchester's skyline however I could not find a more formal theme to apply to the site.
We have also been communicating when everyone will be free to film the teaser trailer as our deadline is soon approaching. As it stands, we should be filming on the 7th April.

23/3 Experimental presentation
The presentation last week went well, but I am concern the group isn't motivated to complete the project. I believe this as last week, on the same day as the presentation, our member of the group who had the film was only uploading the film on the day of the deadline just hours before the presentation. Each week, our group meets and we don't ever set targets to reach for the following week. This is an alternative way to postpone work without progressing as I believe it is always possible to set targets to complete.
Our ideas seem to liquidise very quickly as the group never all seem to be on the same page. I struggle to understand the cause or concept behind the group's motivation. At best, I try to ensure that the group is progressing and have made the decision to continue work even if it means without making the group aware. Again it seems we have no solid infrastructure to our work, which I only hope leads us to serendipitous discoveries. The whole project is boring as nobody can explain why we conducting the project or what we hope to accomplish the project.
I think our group is only trying to pass this module without actually accomplishing anything, which makes me sad. I cannot change the ethics of the group members so I have to go on with it. If it was down to myself, I would pursue the idea of representing 5 different sins through shadow techniques as this would be the easiest for the group. The dancer idea is quite boring as there isn't a link between the dance or dancer to the seven deadly sins.

11/3 DMF Sound exploration
In today's seminar with Matt, we explored the use of sound to advance narratives. We played different instruments and found sounds we thought would be interesting for our project. Some instruments included the guitar and arpeggio, but our group found the voice changing instrument the most interesting as we could create distorted voices to represent voices from victims of room 112.
We also thought it would be a good idea for to have a old resident of the room to post up some audio clips he recorded on his own. These audio clips will then be found and blogged by the investigator to use as supporting evidence of the paranormal room.
We put together a brief schedule of when we would like things to be completed by and hope to stay on track using the schedule.
I got out a Marantz PMD 661 and recorded the audio clips of Tyler and Louise both speaking into the voice changing instrument. I also assisted another group with their sound recordings.

9/3 Completed infographic of tally chart
Today I completed the infographic that shows everyone who has stayed in Room 112 of the Earnshaw hotel. This infographic is useful for insight into the room without it being tedious. It allows viewers to gage how popular the hotel is and to see which demographic finds the room most appealing.

7/3 DMF Website creation and digital diary
I have completed the creation of my website and gone through the proper channels to hosting the site. I conducted research into low priced domains to see why one would be most suitable for myself. Some domains I came across were GoDaddy, Just host and ipage. Initially I believed GoDaddy to be the best as the online e-lecturer who provided the tutorial on how to operate Dreamweaver was promoting GoDaddy himself. I am sure it is a form of marketing, because once I had researched into the common problems of GoDaddy I became uncertain. Two deciding factors in my decision was the price and support. I wanted to register with a domain that offered sufficient support to its clients and did not hold a bad record for satisfying customer queries. I also wanted to a lowest priced domain too. After comparing different domains I noticed that many of them have very similar problems and that it was very subjective. I understand that companies like these won't always have support available right away.
I chose to go with ipage for my domain and have now purchased my domain and uploaded my site. It accomplishes what I set out to achieve and I am happy with it. It works as a online hub of information for myself and provides a method of contact for anybody to get in touch. There are things I would like to change so it will be an ongoing process of taking down the site and updating it, but I am happy to finally have it all ready.
The site is visualsofasimplist.co.uk
The name of the site reflects my style of creativity.
I noted how frequently I used and accessed social media in a day to gage how important social media is, I was quite shocked by the results.

07:52 - Facebook via Laptop
08:01 - Tumblr via Laptop

Considering the results, this is probably similar for audience profiles similar to myself meaning social media is really a great tool for communicating information to others like myself.

4/3 DMF Graphic Novel exploration
Today we explored the conventions of graphic novels and the reasons why they are implemented. I began drafting the poster for the project and added additional information to the wikia. The class took part in an exercise to portray the results of the uses of Dopamine. This was conducting by doing a simple quiz and splitting the class into two teams. Groups were given the chance to tell the class how far they were with each production. We had explained where we were and the planned features we want to implement. It will be good to have a full team meeting, but as Lou and are available at different times, we have not yet been able to have one.

18/2 DMF seminar
Today we had a session with Matt where he brought the majority of the class up to speed with the use of Wikia pages. We also had to create an elevator pitch and pitch it to Matt. Mine was okay, but it needed more buzzwords to provide the flavour I think it was missing. Matt introduced the whole class to infographics and the uses of infographics, which was really useful. We saw examples of infographics and I searched up the superman to have a little bit more time to view it. It was a great way to quickly create a comparison between the different costumes.
Matt recommended we started creating infographics with a website called "Piktochart". I used the website to gain a feel for the tools of the site, however I find it is very simple and good for quick infographics. Its not something I would personally prefer to use as it is very limited in what it can achieve. I would prefer to use Photoshop to take full creative control of what would be exactly displayed on the infographic.
As Lou was ill today, only me and Tyler were able to make the seminar session and this gave me the chance to properly speak to Tyler to communicate ideas between each other. It will be best to have both Lou and Ty present, but we can just schedule a meeting this week. I have enquired about when both Ty and Lou will be free so I am looking forward to the meeting.
We also now have an infographic of the timeline of occurrences that happen in room 112, which Tyler created. I will be creating an infographic for the people who have stayed in room 112. It will be done in a similar to tally chart format.

11/2 DMF Changing groups
Today I came into the session and noticed that the members of my group are unable to attend the session due to them being the film festival in Berlin. This brought me a huge lack of confidence in the group as I enquired about a group meeting happening before the session today. I asked another group if I could join and came on board with Louise and Tyler's idea. Tyler was away, because he too had gone to Berlin, but Louise was in.
I showed the class (Me and Louise), the interactive YouTube button project I had created as part of the mini project. I have a list written down of the current transmedia elements we plan to create for the project.
Today was really useful as I was briefed on the project, but I hope to meet with the whole group soon to discuss ideas. I also created a Wikia page today, which will act as the hub of information for the project. I explored a few and found another wiki site called Wikispaces, however what put me off about this page is that it charged.
This hub of information allows for the group to have input at anytime. Me and Lou found some fonts, which I sent to her via email and CC'd in Tyler.

Today we had a social media seminar with Caroline and the areas she discussed were incredible. It was a real credit to have her give insight into social media as a professional platform and I hope to have further sessions from herself.
I am particularly interested in self-promotion & marketing, so I am super excited to see what other areas she explores.
I hope to attend more sessions

9/2 Experimental Meeting
Unfortunately one member of the group were unable the meeting planned for today due to homely circumstances, but the group did manage to continue developing one of the ideas.
For the Shadow dancing season ideas, we discussed;
- colour schemes
- interactivity conventions
- possible sounds (Song from Insidious)
- themes
- shot style
- basic audience profile
- other influences
- additional elements
In all it was a good discussion, but I think the group will need to sit down and properly come together with some thoughts. I may start to develop some ideas to throw at the group to push ideas.

7/2 - 8/2 Website creation
I have been working on how to create my own site for use on Tumblr, it might be a little bit more complicated than anticipated as the coding as to be changed and prepared for Tumblr format. I hope to be able to complete the whole site soon.

5/2 Experimental Meeting + Lecture
Today we had a lecture where Martine went over what required for task 1 and showed us a few examples of experimental films.
She recommended that anyone who didn't attend the session last week to catch up with the notes she posted up on Blackboard.
Here is a list of experimental terminology: Non-linear structure, personal view, abstract film, cameraless film, structural / format, found footage / collage film, underground film, video art, installation, expanded cinema, performance-based film.
Martine did not answer my question directly when I asked how many characters we are restricted to using in the narrative.
The group has to pitch 2 ideas in for the main pitch and have to pitch the 5 minute idea.
Some ideas for our project:
- 1st idea;
Explore the theme of desensitised violence in society.
The images we plan to use are of violence & archived footage of extreme violence
The sounds we plan to use are peaceful sounds like babies giggling
- 2nd idea;
Explore our character who would be a gory ballet dancer
The images we plan to use are of the dancer performing ballet in an all white outfit
The sounds we plan to use are destructive and horrible sounds like a violent chainsaw
- 3rd idea;
Explore the theme of seasons
The images we plan to use are shadow plays that will change colour to represent a different season.
We currently have no plans for the sounds
We were considering idea #2 with ideas #1 & #3 and making these ideas our focus for the next meeting.

4/2 DMF YouTube annotations
In class, Matt went over how to use annotations from YouTube to expand a narrative. I have some previous experience with using YouTube buttons and was very familiar with the project, however I did participate and created a small digital project that allows the viewer to navigate around university.
The link for this is below.

4/2 Meeting with Debbie
Today I had a meeting with Debbie to go over some of what we had already planned and to see what kind of thought pattern we should have. I have more notes about the meeting in my notepad, but it was very helpful the topics we discussed.

3/2 Guest Speaker - Julie Bower & Anton Short
Today we had guest speakers come in and speak to the class about different sectors of Media.
Julie Bower who is a TV producer & writer came in and spoke to us about the process of writing and about climbing the ladder in the television industry. I have more notes in my notepad
Anton Short is a freelance editor and came in to speak to the class about the editing process and the editing sector. I have more notes available in my notepad.
I also got to sit down with Amy and Kieran to go through some ideas and we came up with some really good ideas.

2/2 Guest Speaker - Nick Crossland
Today the class had Nick Crossland from Rocket (Sheffield) come down and speak to us about digital and interactive projects. He went through the process they use at Rocket to begin a digital project which was cool. I have more notes on the lecture in my notepad.
I also got the chance to speak to Abi and Kieran about our idea. We knew what we wanted to accomplish, however the game idea was leaning a little bit more towards a drama.
After speaking with Debbie, the group thinks it may not be best to pursue this idea as it would be ideal for a drama.

29/1 - 1/2 Emailing professionals
I already had an idea for what careers path I wanted to pursue, so I wanted to start reaching out to professional digital and experimental marketers. There have been a few marketing projects that have caught my eye and professionals I would like to reach out to:
1. Rahat from MagicofRahat
- Rahat is a globally established YouTuber who goes around pulling pranks on people, his pranks have been widely received by many audiences and even led him to his marketing campaign with Toyota.
2. Sherwin Akbarzadeh
- Sherwin is a established cinematographer and has had many projects in either advertising or marketing. His work has even featured on Vimeo Staff Picks and led him to work with Mini Cooper for a marketing campaign.
I have reached out to the both of them and Sherwin has already shown interest in an email interview and possibly a guest speak.

31/1 - 1/2 Website Creation
Now that I finished the crash course in Dreamweaver, I have begun experimenting with website creation. I have begun creating a site for myself without the guide to see how much I can accomplish. I look forward to seeing the end result.
31/1 Discussing ideas
Abi suggested the idea of doing quite the artistic piece, similar to Intervals. The piece would be very dark and would portray how accustomed to violence society is. She proposed it as an alternative to the video game idea incase Martine doesn't like our idea. I liked the idea a lot, because it would be very creative and would be a gritty piece.
As we were on the subject of "making a project that suits criteria" Me and Amy soon realised that Martine was a huge fan of French experimental film such as La Jette & Un chien andalou. We thought that if we made our main character or one of our main characters French and female, it would aid us in filling the criteria for the module.
The idea soon came to me that if we turned Abi's idea into a backstory for the French female character, we would be able to accomplish something that everyone could be happy with.
I managed to source a character who is female and French (Shermie from SNK) that doesn't have an over-exposed backstory leaving room for our group to fill as fiction. In Tuesday's meeting, I will discuss this with the group and let them know of my findings, however I do not want to completely bend to what lecturers/tutors want. I will adjust the rules to fit my project.
Shermie is actually a long-term character from King of Fighters and was in a band with another main character (Iori). I think we would be able to take Shermie from her universe and implement hers into ours and create a backstory about her growing up.

30/1 Creation of groups
Today in our session, we managed to luckily create a complete group. We were briefed on what we needed to do for our assignment, my main concern for both modules are how to complete the brief with my idea. The full group now consist of: Abi, Amy, Kieran and myself.
I proposed the idea to Abi & Amy to see if they were interested and they both seem pretty keen on the idea. I really like the ideas they put in as well as their views will differ from mine which will make for a more interesting piece.
I sent Abi & Amy the short film we watched in class called Intervals by Peter Greenaway as it was a concept for a short film.

30/1 DMF Website Creation
After watching the 29th video of the series, the e-lecturer has stated that the skills we have learnt during the course of the project that we had just completed, will be used to recreate the next project again. I have learnt website creation to a basic level and this is what I was intended to do.

28/1 DMF Universes & Confirmation of my idea
In our lecture today with Matt, he covered the effectiveness of universes and re-introduced the module to bring everyone up to pace with each other. Here are a few notes I had taken from the lecture:
- Share characters and settings with or without continuity
- Tolkien called it his "legendarium"
- "Is fan-fiction a stolen universe?"
- Sometimes authors engineer a setting for others (writers, fans, contributors)
- "retroactive continuity" [quoted from wiki] (often shortened to retcon) refers to the alteration of previously established facts in a literary work.
- Rules & divergence & convergence
- Dopamine & interruptions
- "discontinuity principle"
- The crossing of universes (E.T in Star Wars)
- Films within in films (Scene where in Pulp Fiction, the woman tells the story of Kill Bill)
- If I was to make a trailer for my film, it would be fine as a submission for this module
Today I sat down with Matt to communicate my idea to him. Though he was very hesitant and concerned about the project, I managed to effectively pitch him. In result, he accepted my idea after approaching another colleague (I think Annie). He said to me that I would need to work as a group, which meant I could only work with my other classmate who wasn't present in the class at that time.
One interesting piece of software I would like to check out and use is "Team week". It looks fairly similar to Google Calendar and hope that it will be easy enough to operate.
Here are the outcomes I would like to include in my final portfolio for now:
- trailer or teaser
- character profiles
- twitter pages for characters
- Facebook page for project updates
- website created specifically for the project
- leaderboard on website for "move counter" scores
- Evidence of Team week being used to communicate
- Potential release to smart devices similar to Totally Amp'd
The class went round in sharing ideas about what each person wanted to do.
I also used a presentation website called "Prezi" to create an online presentation after a mind-mapping exercise Matt got the class to execute. This really helped with what direction to work in.

27/1 Introduction to Professional Context
In today's lecture, the class were given module documents. One document was the module guide, a reading list, task 1 and task 2. Here are some notes I had taken down from the class:
- I will need to conduct 3 interviews with 3 professionals
- I will gain a higher mark from conducting interviews with professionals that have been in their field of work for different lengths of time
- A schedule and log is required
- I have to conduct atleast two interviews face to face and have to conduct an interview via telephone or Skype
- The recordings of the interviews do not need to be handed in
- I am allowed to interview the speakers of this module
- Task 1 needs a main question for the task to be centred around
- The appendices do not count for word count
- "SHU Career Central"
- "Career Mentoring Scheme"
- Self employment sessions will be taking place from the 11th Feb - 11th March at 2pm till 3pm
- Pathways session will happen on Weds 18th March from 11am - 3pm
- Caroline handle: Social Media, self-employment & CV Support
- "Venture Matrix" has people looking for corporate videos all the time (voluntary)
- Venture Matrix can be used to contribute to this module
- Self-employment can be used to contribute to this module
- Film festival dates can be found searching for "British council film festival directory"

27/1 Experimental Meeting
Me and Kieran met earlier before our other lecture to discuss further our ideas what we wanted to accomplish from this project, are some notes I jotted down from the meeting:
- Real life fighting game (Directly influenced from Video Game High School)
- No narrative / the film will consist of different fight matches
- Groups of 4 are required for this module meaning we must find two more group members
- The MUGEN game engine is available for non-commercial use meaning we can use it royalty free
- Potentially a 1 minute exercise for short assignment instead of 2 minutes, also the exercise may need to be of unedited footage. Our contingency is to record a match directly from the game engine
- Tyrese would cosplay as Sean from Street Fighter - http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100408201804/streetfighter/images/c/cd/Sean-taunt.gif
- Kieran would potentially cosplay as Kyo from King of Fighters http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters2/kyo-kof98.jpg
- The concept is to deliver a YouTube button narrative
- Each sequence would be roughly 1 - 1.30 mins in duration
- Potentially start from really basic actions into more advanced actions
- Here's an example of the YouTube button narrative route:
Punch - Dies Fireball - Dies Ultra 1 - Win
Kick - Dies Special Kick - Onto next move
Block - Onto next move Special Punch - Dies Ultra 2 - Lose
- Possibility to include a half wrong action that allows the player to redeem their self with the next move
- Possibility to rewind the action that causes the character to die & gives the player another chance to select the right move
- "Move counter" This will be a counter that counts each time a player makes move
- Possibility to have a section on the website that contains a leaderboard for players to submit their move counter counts to compare against other players
- Facebook page would be used to post continuous updates about the project

25/1 DMF Transmedia Examples
So I wanted to look into forms of transmedia that already existed and came across a few:
- Dubplate Drama
This was a UK series sent in the underground lifestyle of British music industry. The series allowed viewers to vote the outcomes for each episode prioritising what the audience wanted first.
- Deliever me to Hell - Real Zombies Attack
This film was made purposely to integrate the button features that YouTube uses it. It allows its viewers to select the next action to occur in the next sequence. Viewers can die in the film if they make the wrong decision.
- State of Syn
This digital web series was first previewed on YouTube before being licensed to distributors such as Hulu and ScreenHits. It also expands the storyline via mobile applications, one is available on smartphones and the other is available on Google Glass
- Totally Amp'd
This digital series was launched on smart devices. It was aimed at tweens as it merged the lines of TV and smart devices. Each episode was known as an "appisode" and offered bonus incentives for when a new one was watched.

23/1 Experimental Phone meeting with Kieran
I called Kieran earlier to discuss our project. We needed to revisit our ideas that we had thought of from last semester as we decided what we were interested in doing.
I have messaged our lecturer Martine with following message to see what her thoughts were on our idea.
"Good Afternoon Martine,
I have messaged our lecturer Martine with following message to see what her thoughts were on our idea.
"Good Afternoon Martine,
Me and Kieran have already begun discussing and considering ideas for our experimental film project, however we had a few concerns in regards to filling the criteria for this module that I was hoping you would be able to answer.
To briefly elaborate, we are looking to create a digital film similar to that of Video Game High School. I will be attaching links in this email that I hope will help communicate my idea more thoroughly and in case you haven't seen the series, the first episode will be one of the links.
Our concept is to make a film that is centred around a particular fighting game. The fighting game we have chosen is similar to Street Fighter. The game we are actually using is an open-source project started years ago, which allows the community following the project to make any modifications as they see fit. They also allow this jurisdiction without any copyright meaning it can be used as a royalty free project.
As seen in Video Game High School, the series pays particular focus to the gamer being immersed in the game world, but the game graphics are represented by people in real life performing game-like actions instead of actual game graphics. We would like to deploy this technique in our film and also take advantage of the game we are using to create sequences that have both 'actual game footage' and 'real life game footage'.
We have also considered making the film interactive for audiences to have the choice of actions to undertake. An example is the option to either punch, kick or block and each action would result in a different reaction. This would be similar to Deliver Me To Hell - Real Zombies Attack that is on YouTube.
Hopefully this isn't too much, but my questions are:
1. If we were to make an interactive YouTube film, would the accumulation of all sequences from the final project be used to determined the final duration of the project as it has to be between 5 - 10 minutes?
2. As an alternative, in case this doe not fill the criteria, we were considering making a film about someone actually playing the game. Would this be okay instead?
3. We are planning to use ourselves (if possible) for the 2 minute project and to cast actors for the 5 - 10 minute piece, would this be okay?
4. Is it possible to use the final project film from this module in another module if relevant?
5. Do you have any concerns about this project?
Here are links to help communicate our idea:
#1 Video Game High School Episode 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JqR3GVqib4
#2 Street Fighter Alpha Gameplay Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvQGP2v1tlk
#3 Example of game that can be used as it was designed by the project community https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGWx0rIsZJg
#4 First Sequence from Deliver Me To Hell - Real Zombies Attack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9p1yBlV7Ges
Please let me know your thoughts as soon as you can and I am sure that we would need to discuss more details with you in person.
Best,
Tyrese"
From today's phone meeting with Kieran, I had made the following notes:
- 11am on Tuesday (meeting with Kieran)
- Concept (Put things down on paper)
- Source some MUGEN projects as examples
- Email Martine
- YouTube Button Narrative
- 2 Minute idea (Me & Kieran) 5 - 10 minute film (Cast Actors)
- "How many moves it takes to beat the fighter" (Can be used as incentive similar to high scores)
- "Possibility of customisation"
- If we do an interactive video, would the accumulation of all videos need to be between 5 - 10 minutes for final project?
- If we made the YouTube button narrative idea & made a film of someone playing it to meet experimental criteria?
On Tuesday at 11am I will be having a meeting with Kieran to go over some finer details about the project, but as for now we have concept.
Currently our inspirations are:
- Video Game High School
- Street Fighter
- Deliver Me To Hell - Real Zombies Attack

So far I am up to episode 10 with this YouTuber who provides an elaborate guide on website creation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqZU18m6dpQ&index=11&list=PLDED5C745A1F3D60A
21/1 DMF Why Video games are addictive
As a person who has played video games for many years I had never thought of the act of playing as an addiction or even an disorder, but from articles that I have researched and read this could possibly be the case. Sure the disorder isn't as hazardous as gambling, drugs or alcohol, but there have been some pretty extreme and serious cases of "Internet Gaming Disorder" and even "Video Game Addiction".
Here are links to online articles I read to understand the addiction with video games:
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/media-spotlight/201308/are-video-games-addictive
http://www.video-game-addiction.org/what-makes-games-addictive.html
http://www.techaddiction.ca/why_are_video_games_addictive.html
What seems to be an increasingly more dangerous addiction is internet gaming. The cause is that games now can undergo updates and never come to an inevitable end. The first article bullet points a brief list of associated behaviours that people suffer from that indicate potential signs of the addiction. I fall under some of the behaviours named and could have potentially been a video game addict when I was younger. All articles suggest that this kind of addiction is experienced by young boys.
Studies mentioned in the articles suggest that this behaviour does not simply pass away. It sticks with the person exhibiting it and becomes more dire as the person ages. I cannot remember what exactly made me stopping playing games less, it may have very well been my interest into film or my studies, but I came of a point where I acknowledged that I couldn't play games like I used to.
The 2nd article bullet points a list with brief descriptions about the attachment felt by gamers to game. I agree with the attachment felt by gamers but if these sense of attachments were to be transferred into the film, the feeling would result in a film that is as addictive as game. The limitations of a game have been released with the inclusion of online, but how can the inclusion of online interaction be included in a film project?
Change of thought
A notion just came to my a head, if the approach to a film was to be of that, which takes onboard the time-image proposed by Deleuze. A film without end could be achieved. It would have to be a film that loses it beginning and end, maybe even repeat till the meaning is lost due to simulations. This could then invoke the theory of the hyperreal that Baudrilliard explored and produce a film with no end.
As this maybe too difficult for this project it will only be a thought, but the main aim of this module to create a product that utilises transmedia.
Not to overwhelm myself if the film can contain these elements: A High score to beat, a main objective to beat, allow gamers to customise the characters and a world to discover. This would be a great place to start for the perfect recipe to an interesting and addictive film.

21/1 DMF Blog sites
Searching the internet for blog sites, I came across this article which seems useful for identifying which blog site I would like to use for my production:
http://stylecaster.com/best-free-blog-sites/
I will write a bit about each site and any other important information:
blog.com
As this site was unavailable, I believe that it would be the most unreliable of the list to use as a blog site
Blogger.com
I am very familiar with blogger, once I get the hang of it. Seems like an easy to use site for blogging. It seems easier to maintain an academic blog rather than a visually appealing blog and the themes can be a bit boring if unpaid. As far as I know there are no fees to use the site, but for themes there are.
Penzu.com
This blog site is useful for private information. The blog focusses on private journal entries and isn't too keen for sharing. Good for personal information not wanted to be leaked but share amongst the few. Pricing is available for additional features.
Squarespace.com
Good site for creating a professional site, I think the most appealing to photographers. The sad thing is pricing is charged for features in which makes it less appealing.
Svbtle.com
Really good for note taking and minimalistic. One side for unpublished notes and the other for published notes. That is all there is to it. This makes it the lesser option as there is not customisation for it, but may be good for a journal. According to another blog post, the site now charges its users a month.
Tumblr.com
I have a lot of experience with Tumblr and its freedom. Great site for creating a blog and the themes are really good. Even the unpaid themes are professional. The pricing occurs only when a specific theme is desired, but other than this they are not other expenses. The tumblr community is also really strong and supportive.
Webs.com
Professional site for professionals, great for an official site and has some really great themes. Sadly additional features are included as a fee.
Weebly.com
Fairly similar to Webs.com for all accounts
Wix.com
Again similar to Webs.com, but seems really good for eCommerce.
Wordpress.com
Great site for creating a blog and great for themes too. This site is really good and similar to Tumblr, but the only thing is that additional features are charged.
After considering the blogs I believe Tumblr to be my best option for creating a blog site for the production.

21/1 1st Digital Media for Film session
Today I had an introduction to the digital media for film module for this semester. I was briefed on the outcomes of the module and briefly went over the tasks for the module. They are fairly similar to the tasks I had for the previous semester.
The focus of the module is the transmedia of creative products. This means the interaction of different media for the same production. An example is the inclusion of social medias in media formats.
The work for this module can be submitted via YouTube or Vimeo, however my submission method should be well considered. Matt mention the tool "Popcorn" and said some YouTube make use of this software. This could be something to look into.
Matt made clear that the coding for a site will not be accessed and won't affect my grade, however the quality of the site will. This means choosing to enrich my site with coding will improve my mark as it will allow me to have full advantage of the site.
I think a good starting point would be to have a look at digital series like Totally Amp'd and State of Syn which take advantage of transmedia synergy. Maybe some YouTube narratives that take advantage of the buttons available too. Lou and Ty mentioned bands that use transmedia to engage their audiences which I think sounded cool. Matt mentioned the "Why so serious" campaign which could be good for research.
One possible method of transmedia is fan-fiction, which I recall being very popular with animation and media icons. I know Naruto has a lot of fan-fiction, but also YouTubers Zoella and Pointlessblog have a lot of fan-fiction about them too.
If I am to work in a group this means each member needs to contribute forms of transmedia. Matt said if I was doing a Facebook page for a production, each member should have a page for a different part of the production and that there should not be a singular Facebook page.
Matt mentioned the term "Prosumers". When a consumer becomes the producer of a production, fan-fiction are good examples of this. Sometimes prosumers may make spin-offs of media formats.
We had a go today on collaborative software, as I had never discovered them before it was really good insight for myself. Padlet was good for sharing quick notes, but lacked being able to clearly differentiate the ideas. This would be a good software for when ideas are to be shared without feeling the person isn't going to be taken seriously I thought. Trello was another good software for making notes to share. It was pretty easy to navigate and didn't seem too difficult.
Another interesting point made today was the use of hashtags. Comical and inventive hashtags can sometimes being manipulated. An example that Ty mentioned was the #susanalbumparty This tag was created as #SusanAlbumParty but could also be read as #SusAnalBumParty
I have also been given the task to look into "Dopamine". The chemical released in the brain that relates to reward-motivated behaviour in mammals and humans.
Looking into blog sites are also important to see which one would best serve my production.
Things to do for next week are:
1. Write blog post about what blog site I have decided to use for my production and why
2. Write blog post about why video games are addictive
3. Look into examples of transmedia
A bonus task is to start looking into coding for website development.
